Goodbye Porkpie Hat

Matthew J. Evans is an accomplished bassist and vocalist who is making his name in the world of music. His style covers a wide range from smooth standards to the hard-hitting music of Charles Mingus. Matthew is completing the Jazz Studies program at Cuesta College while studying improvisation and jazz theory under internationally renowned vibraphonist and educator Charlie Shoemake.

His experience with Shoemake has given him firm bebop grounding, allowing him to translate inventive melodic solos and interactive bass lines to any genre. Matthew has also studied under Brian Kendrick at the Brubeck Summer Jazz Workshop and Michael Nowak at the SLO Symphony's Summer String Workshop.

In 2016, he received the Matt Taylor Scholarship Award from the San Luis Obispo Jazz Federation and now serves as a board member.

​

Matthew has extensive experience with combos, big bands, and conducts four jam sessions each month at two venues in San Luis Obipso.
